FLY DESIGNER
Rob Meade
Brought up in a family deeply immersed in outdoor pursuits, Rob's formative years were saturated with fishing escapades; every break saw him on the water. His parents, both avid fly fishers in a time when the practice was a rarity, instilled in him a love for the craft. A memorable Christmas gifted Rob his fly rod, tailored for the creeks and streams his family cherished during their leisure hours. In the 1980s, Rob delved into designing and crafting lures suited explicitly to various environments, a pursuit that granted him an intricate comprehension of hydrodynamics.
Subsequently, Rob stepped into the role of guiding anglers who aspired to conquer Australia's revered snag-dwelling giant, the Murray cod. This magnificent freshwater fish drew clients from across the globe, including the UK, USA, Japan, and the Middle East, to seek Rob's expertise. Navigating the cod's intricate lairs brought forth the eternal challenge of fly versus snag, with much of the guiding under cover of darkness, further exacerbating the fly-snagging issue. These trials catalyzed the creation of the innovative Gutless and Shuffler fly patterns, specifically engineered to offer an unprecedented level of snag resistance. Moreover, Rob's profound understanding of hydrodynamics enabled him to infuse these flies with additional attributes; they were easy to cast and exhibited enticing vibrations when stripped, an elusive combination to master.
The uniqueness of these fly designs soon captured the global spotlight, inviting Rob to join Rainy's distinguished design team. Alongside his roles as a guide and fly designer, Rob has been an enduring magazine contributor for over two decades, and he holds the prestigious position of freshwater native columnist for Australia's Flyfisher magazine. Rob currently resides in Victoria, Australia, continuing to impart his knowledge and expertise to the fishing community.
