FLY DESIGNER
Graham Coombes
Hailing originally from Iluka, a quaint fishing village in northern New South Wales, Australia, my lifelong obsession with fishing was ignited by my father, who took me along on his shrimp boat as soon as I could toddle. From those early days, my connection to fishing has remained unbroken.
2002 a new chapter of my life began when my family and I moved to Canada. The abundance of fly fishing opportunities offset the cold Canadian winters, making it a worthwhile exchange.
My fly-tying addiction has held me captive for over 25 years, with inspiration initially sparked by a magazine article. The challenge of creating unique and original fly patterns was an irresistible endeavor that I undertook, and that creative quest still thrives today.
Sharing my passion, I find gratification in leading workshops at local fly fishing clubs. In 2009, I was honored to receive the Jack Sutton Award for my contributions to creativity and innovation in fly tying, bestowed upon me by the esteemed Izaak Walton Fly-fishing Club.
When it comes to fly fishing, I enthusiastically embrace a diverse range of aquatic creatures - if it swims, I'm there. Yet, amidst this variety, a particular affinity has developed for Muskie, an enigmatic freshwater predator that presents a challenge not easily surmounted, but certainly not beyond reach. The pursuit of Muskie demands a persistent "just one more cast" mindset, a characteristic many say I possess.
