Dean Finnerty
Nearly half a century ago, he embarked on his journey of tying flies and embracing the world of fly fishing during his grade school days. Through the decades, his unwavering focus remained on steelhead fishing. His introduction to guiding came about in his teenage years when he was employed at a sporting goods store in his hometown of Gresham, Oregon. Those formative years saw him guiding along the Sandy, Clackamas, and Salmon Rivers. His expertise extended to the Deschutes River and various coastal rivers as well.
With a tenure spanning over a decade, he honed his guiding skills on the renowned fly water section of the North Umpqua River to the east of Roseburg, Oregon. He has guided trout trips on the McKenzie River, salmon excursions on the Elk and Sixes Rivers, and smallmouth bass outings on the main stem Umpqua River.
His contributions have graced the pages of esteemed regional and national fly fishing publications, including Salmon, Trout Steelheader Magazine, Salmon-Steelhead Journal, Northwest Fly Fishing Magazine, American Angler, and Washington-Oregon Fish and Game Magazine. Beyond his written works, his skill in outdoor photography has been featured in numerous fly fishing publications and online magazines, including Catch Magazine.
A sought-after speaker, he imparts his wisdom on fly fishing topics through seminars at diverse outdoor show venues in Oregon and Washington and numerous fly fishing clubs scattered across the Pacific Northwest. Currently affiliated with Trout Unlimited, his commitment to fly fishing remains unwavering.
