Brian "Koz" Kozminski
Brian Kozminski, affectionately referred to as "Koz" among his fellow fishing enthusiasts, has pursued trout in Michigan's waters for over three decades. Originally hailing from Grand Rapids, he considered the Rogue River and Grand River his home waters. Yet, his appetite for angling adventures led him to frequently journey to Grayling, where the allure of the Holy Waters beckoned him. Almost ten years ago, a transformative decision saw him, along with his wife Lesley, daughter Simone, and their two yellow labs, Roxy and Stella, establishing a permanent residence up north. Nestled in Petoskey, the Bear, and Maple Rivers became his primary sanctuaries. Today, residing in Boyne City, the Jordan and Boyne rivers grace his backyard as home waters.
Brian's commitment to conservation and sharing his passion shines brightly. A lifelong member of Trout Unlimited and holding an ex officio role for the Miller VanWinkle Chapter, he dedicates his time to educating local children in fly tying. He extends his influence by introducing kids at Sheridan Elementary School in Petoskey to the fascinating world of Salmon in the Classroom. With a steadfast belief in catch and release, he champions the cause as Northern Michigan's Ambassador for Greenfish while also being a dedicated member of the FFF.
Brian's journey into fly tying commenced at nine, taught by his father. This skill set has propelled him to diverse destinations, including Belize, where he tested his mettle against Bonefish and the elusive Permit, St. Maarten, where he cast for Tarpon, and the breathtaking landscapes of Colorado's Rockies, pursuing Greenbacks and Cutthroat Trout.
While the allure of Steelhead and sizeable Brown Trout under cover of night captivate him, Brian finds true enchantment in the native Brook Trout of northern Michigan. Shimmering in the calm rivers, their orange and blue halos hold a special place in his heart.
Currently serving as a manufacturer's sales representative for various brands, including Rainy's Flies, Brian continues to shape the angling world with his expertise. To delve deeper into Brian's affinity for all things piscatorial, his blog at www.truenorthtrout.com offers insight into his passion-filled pursuits.
