FLY DESIGNER
Andrew Sobota
Nurtured by the landscape of Southwestern Wisconsin, Andy's formative years were steeped near some of the world's most remarkable limestone spring creeks. Under his father's influence—a professor and skilled bass fisherman—he developed an insatiable appetite for angling that couldn't be quelled. At 14, he first grasped a fly rod in pursuit of panfish, casting poppers with youthful zeal.
As he grew, so did his passion for the craft. By turning 22, Andy was already immersed in the intricate art of fly tying and guiding. The local spring creeks became his canvas, providing sustenance and funding for his adventures. College became secondary in its conventional form as he embarked on journeys that spanned the country from the untamed expanses of Alaska to the balmy waters of Florida, from the serene Smoky Mountains to the majestic Rockies.
His pursuit of perfection underscores Andy's character. His time at the tying vise is as much a journey of self-discovery as it is an exploration of patterns for his beloved local creeks and rivers. He effortlessly transitions from crafting innovative creations tailored to his surroundings to meticulously replicating classic salmon flies that stand as testaments to a time-honored tradition.
A man of diverse interests, Andy has not only been guided under the wings of Kelly Galloup on the Madison River but also thrives as an enthusiastic bird hunter and skilled woodworker. Amidst his pursuits, he also imparts knowledge as a chemistry educator in Lanesboro, Minnesota, his abode nestled along the tranquil banks of the quaint Frego Creek.
