Our Fly Designers

Dave Johnson

My working career spanned over 35 years in the mechanical industry. Elizabeth, my lovely wife, and I retired to the city of Ilwaco on the southwestern tip of Washington state. For over fifty years fishing has been my avocation. My obsession was and still is fly-fishing. I am a proud member (and past president) of the Rainland Fly Casters of Astoria Oregon. The Rainlander’s perform stream restoration work and fish habitat enhancement in our local area. Our club also assists the state of Oregon in their fish carcass placement program. My hobbies are wood carvings of fish and fly-fishing poetry (when the streams are out of shape). The love of fly-fishing and art draws me to create new fly patterns. The Medusa is the culmination of fifty years of fishing experience.

Big Fish

The thrill

of playing really big fish

Is every fly-fishermen’s

ultimate wish

The total chaos

when the line shoots away

As you fumble for the loops

so they won’t go astray

Is the adrenalin rush

on which fly-fishermen feed

That somehow fulfills

our deep-seated need
